The Slovene Notariat enjoys a long tradition, going back into the 18th century. With continuous developmental changes under various governmental systems, it maintained its authority all until 1944 when it was abolished by the AVNOJ decree. The new Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia re-introduced the notarial institution, defining it as a public service regulated by law. On these grounds, the Notaries Act was adopted, stipulating fundamental principles on the notariat, notary's status, notarial activities and the Chamber of Notaries.

Notaries are obliged to enter the Chamber of Notaries of Slovenia that is, according to the Notaries Act, a legal entity responsible for the Notariat's reputation, authenticity and development. It represents interests of notaries and notarial candidates as well as performs other tasks pursuant to statutory powers.

Slovenia introduced the so-called Latin Notariat, which is the most widely spread notarial system. In 1997, the Chamber of Notaries of Slovenia became member of the International Union of Notaries (UINL) that is currently uniting 77 member states, of which 21 belong to the European Union. The Chamber of Notaries of Slovenia is also a member of the CNUE – Conference of Notarial Institutions of Member Countries of the European Union. Similar organisation of notarial institutions in these countries allows establishing sound international links and enhanced performance of notarial services in the field of international legal relations.
